Where We Go
Explore the mountain areas and destinations we visit on weekend trips throughout the year.
What to Expect from a Weekend Trip
A UBES weekend trip usually means one or two full days in the mountains, alongside plenty of time to socialise and enjoy being away with the Society. Our trips focus on hiking, scrambling, climbing and mountaineering across some of the UK’s best mountain areas.
Each day we split into smaller groups and offer a range of routes, from more relaxed walks through to longer days and scrambling. We aim for walks to be led by appropriately experienced members, including Mountain Leader trained members where possible.
You do not need to be an experienced mountaineer to come along. A basic level of fitness, suitable walking kit and a willingness to get involved are enough for many of our trips.
Weekend trips can be tiring, but they are also one of the best ways to get involved in UBES, spend time outdoors and meet other members.

How Much Does a Weekend Trip Cost?
Most weekend trips cost around £50. The exact price may vary slightly depending on the destination and trip costs.
The trip price normally covers:
- Transport
- Accommodation
- Saturday: breakfast, lunch and dinner
- Sunday: breakfast and lunch
- Group equipment such as maps, compasses and safety equipment
You will normally need to provide your own food for Friday evening and Sunday evening where required.
For more information on typical UBES costs and available financial support, see our Costs & Financial Support page.
How Do I Sign Up?
Weekend trip signups normally take place around two Wednesdays before the trip. Exact signup details are provided ahead of each trip.
Places are often snapped up quickly, particularly at the start of term, so we recommend getting your place in the queue early.
You will complete the trip signup process and payment when your place is confirmed. If all available places have already been taken, we will direct you to our waiting list so that you can be contacted if a space becomes available.
If you later need to withdraw from a trip, please see our Refund Policy for the applicable arrangements.
When Are the Trips?
Weekend trips run throughout the academic year. Check the UBES calendar for upcoming trips, signup dates and other Society events.
Larger trips, including Scotland and Summer Expeditions, have different signup arrangements. See their respective pages for more information.
