Here at UBES we aim to foster an inclusive, non-discriminatory environment. One where you feel safe and comfortable enough to be yourself, while creating memories with like-minded peers.
Barriers to Participation
We acknowledge that the outdoors in Britain is a predominantly white, middle-class activity. According to the EDI Review from AY23/24, 78% of respondents identified as white. This has created multiple barriers for individuals not from this demographic — ranging from kit, membership, nature of socials, financial accessibility and cultural differences. We are committed to challenging those stereotypes and reducing barriers to participation. We provide kit borrowing for members and strive to organise alcohol-free socials free-of-charge for everyone, members or non-members. We also strive to be accommodating to religious practices, and have a weekend trip guide on things to expect.
On Disability
We understand that disabilities can present differently for everyone. As an outdoor society, we strive to accommodate all disabilities. Weekend trips can be overwhelming for those who are neurodivergent or have mental health conditions. The nature of our activities are also not the most friendly to those with physical disabilities, so we still have a long way to go. We aim to handle all these disabilities sensitively, and on a case-by-case basis. If you have questions about your ability to participate, we are more than happy to have an open conversation. We strive to make a space for everyone, regardless of class, race, religion, age, gender, disability or sexual orientation. Most importantly, we recognise the intersectionality of these identities, and the discrimination or privilege that can manifest between them.
