Lake District

The Lake District offers some of the finest mountain walking in England, from broad ridges and long hill days to classic scrambles and multi-day backpacking routes. UBES regularly returns for objectives such as Fairfield Horseshoe, Striding Edge and Scafell Pike, with countless opportunities to link valleys, passes and summits into longer journeys.

Snowdonia / Eryri

Eryri combines dramatic ridges, technical scrambling and excellent multi-day mountain journeys. Popular objectives include Tryfan, the Glyderau, the Carneddau and the Snowdon Horseshoe, while the wider national park offers outstanding terrain for backpacking between remote valleys and high-level routes.

Brecon Beacons / Bannau Brycheiniog

Bannau Brycheiniog is one of our most accessible mountain areas from Bristol, with broad ridges, open moorland and classic summits such as Pen y Fan. It works equally well for introductory hill days and longer backpacking routes, making it a regular part of the UBES trip calendar.

Yorkshire

Yorkshire offers long-distance walking across open moorland, limestone country and broad upland ridges. Trips often include the Yorkshire Dales Three Peaks, but the wider area is equally suited to backpacking, with routes linking remote valleys, waterfalls, limestone pavements and quieter sections of the Dales.

Dartmoor

Dartmoor is one of England’s strongest landscapes for backpacking, with open moorland, granite tors and long stretches far from roads and settlements. In 2025, the Supreme Court confirmed a public right to backpack camp on the Dartmoor commons; the National Park asks campers to use the areas shown on its camping map and follow its Backpack Camping Code. This makes Dartmoor particularly well suited to self-contained overnight and multi-day journeys.

Climbing Trips – Peak District, Portland & Cornwall

Our climbing trips take members to some of the UK’s best outdoor climbing areas, including Peak District gritstone, Portland limestone and the sea cliffs of Cornwall. They provide opportunities to build confidence on real rock, develop trad and sport climbing skills, and put techniques from our weekly climbing sessions into practice.
