Can I join UBES if I’m not a first year?
Absolutely. Members join UBES at every stage of university, including second and third year, final year and postgraduate study.
You do not need to have joined in Freshers’ Week or been involved previously. If you are interested in the outdoors, you are welcome to get involved whenever it suits you.
Do I need previous outdoor experience?
No. UBES welcomes complete beginners as well as experienced walkers, climbers and mountaineers.
Many of our activities are designed to help members develop confidence and outdoor skills over time, and Trip Leaders will make any experience requirements clear where a particular activity needs them.
How much time do I have to commit?
As much or as little as you like. Some members come on one trip a year, while others take part in trips, climbing, socials and training throughout the year.
There is no minimum commitment. You can simply choose the activities that interest you and fit around your course and other commitments.
Do I need to own lots of outdoor equipment?
No. UBES members can borrow a wide range of club equipment, which helps make getting involved much more affordable.
You will still need some personal clothing and equipment for certain activities, but our kit list explains what you need and what may be available to borrow.
I’m keen to join a trip but can’t attend the normal signup. What should I do?
We understand that some members may occasionally be unable to attend the normal signup process because of placements, timetable commitments or other circumstances.
We cannot guarantee that alternative arrangements will always be possible, but please contact us as early as possible and explain your situation.
Can postgraduate students join?
Yes. Postgraduate students are very welcome in UBES and regularly take part in trips, climbing, socials and other activities.
Can I take part if I’m worried about cost?
We work to keep participation costs as low as possible and members can borrow much of the equipment needed for trips.
There may also be financial support available through Bristol SU. See our Costs & Financial Support page for more information.
I’m unsure whether an activity will be suitable for me. Who should I ask?
Please get in touch with the committee or the relevant Trip Leader. We are happy to discuss experience, fitness, accessibility, equipment or anything else that may affect your participation.
If you are unsure, it is always better to ask before signing up.
